Mount Wanakura, Mountain summit in Chichibu, Japan
Mount Wanakura is a mountain summit in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture, rising to about 2000 meters with a network of trails crossing through cedar plantations and broad-leaved forests. These paths wind through areas where different vegetation zones create varied walking conditions and views at different elevations.
Extensive logging operations reshaped the mountain during Japan's postwar period, removing many original fir and hemlock trees that once covered the slopes. This large-scale extraction left a lasting mark on the forest composition that visitors see today.
The mountain is part of the Okuchichibu range, whose name refers to the interior of Chichibu and carries meaning in local geography. Visitors experience this geographical identity while ascending through the varied landscape that surrounds them.
Access to the trailhead is normally by bus from Seibu-Chichibu Station, which gets hikers to the starting point for the climb. Plan enough time since the hike takes several hours and covers varying difficulty levels depending on the route chosen.
Steel rails and abandoned tools still scatter along the paths, bearing witness to the logging operations from decades past. These industrial remnants offer an intriguing window into the region's recent industrial history.
