丸神の滝, Waterfall in Ogano, Japan
Marugami no Taki is a three-tier waterfall in Ogano, a town set within the Chichibu mountain range in Saitama Prefecture. The water drops over sandstone rock across a total height of 76 meters, landing in a shallow pool at the base.
Written records of the falls appear in the Shinpen Musashi Fudoki, a geographical survey compiled during the late Edo period. This text marks the moment when the site was formally documented and became part of the region's recorded landscape.
The name of the falls comes from Mount Ryokami, a mountain long associated with worship in this part of Saitama. Along the path leading to the water, small shrines and stone figures mark the spiritual ties that local people still maintain with the site.
A footpath from the parking area at the end of the mountain road leads to the falls in about 25 minutes on foot. The trail runs through forested terrain and can be slippery after rain, so sturdy shoes are a good idea.
This is the only waterfall in Saitama Prefecture to appear on Japan's official Top 100 Waterfalls list. The water comes directly from Mount Ryokami, where large rock formations help keep the flow going even in dry seasons.
