尾ノ内渓谷

Onouchi Valley is a mountain gorge in Saitama Prefecture featuring high cliff faces and a flowing mountain stream between rocky walls. A suspension bridge spans across the valley, allowing visitors to cross over the water and experience the dramatic landscape up close.

The valley became known during the Edo period when local residents began creating ice formations by directing water down the cliffs in winter months. This traditional practice has continued for centuries and remains an important part of the region's character.

The winter festival celebrates the formation of natural ice pillars, where local craftsmen manipulate water flow to create frozen structures reaching 30 meters.

The valley is most enjoyable to visit when conditions are dry and visibility is clear, particularly during the colder months when ice formations appear. Wear sturdy footwear and stay alert near the stream, as rocks and surfaces can become slippery.

During winter months, natural ice pillars form on the cliff faces when flowing water freezes in extreme cold, creating unusual shapes and patterns. These spontaneous frozen formations are a rare natural spectacle that looks different each winter.
