Mount Shiraiwa

Mount Shiraiwa stands in Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park and reaches approximately 1,900 meters (6,200 feet), forming part of a notable mountain range with several prominent peaks. The landscape features steep slopes covered in forest that offer views across the surrounding valleys.

The mountain held religious significance from the Heian period onward, with remains of an ancient shrine dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai still present in the area. This long spiritual tradition established it as an important center for religious practice in the region.

Near the summit stands Mitsumine Shrine, where visitors can observe a blend of Shinto and Buddhist practices that pilgrims still carry out today. The sacred site draws people seeking spiritual connection in a setting where these traditions have coexisted for centuries.

Visitors reach the mountain by train from Ikebukuro to Chichibu, then continue by bus to the Owa stop where hiking trails begin. The warmer months offer the most stable conditions for climbing and exploring the slopes.

From the summit, visitors see the Arakawa Gorge and Seijo Falls, which appear especially striking at sunrise or under certain weather conditions. Unusual cloud formations develop above the deep valleys due to the specific geography of the area.
