Angel Road, Natural sandbar in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan
Angel Road is a sandbar in the Seto Inland Sea that reveals a 500-meter sand path twice daily at low tide, connecting Shodoshima to three small islands. The path exists only for a few hours before disappearing again as the tide rises.
Local fishermen observed and documented this sandbar formation over centuries, noting its regular appearance and disappearance with tidal changes. The phenomenon gained modern recognition as a natural wonder and became known to a wider audience of visitors.
Visitors write their wishes on wooden ema tablets and hang them near the shrine, following Japanese customs of making offerings at sacred locations. This practice connects personal hopes with the natural rhythm of the place.
The sand path emerges during morning and afternoon low tides and requires checking daily tide schedules to plan your visit. Wear waterproof shoes and allow time to cross safely without being caught by incoming water.
The Hill of Promises overlooks the sandbar with a bell that rings across the waters when visitors ring it. This elevated viewpoint offers a perspective on the formation that ground-level visitors crossing the path cannot experience.
