Chiba Prefectural Open-air Museum Boso-no-Mura

Boso-no-Mura is an open-air museum in Sakae that spreads across several hectares with replicated traditional buildings from different periods of Japanese history. The site features farmhouses, workshops, and storage buildings that show how people lived and worked in these times.

The museum opened in November 1986 and incorporates several archaeological sites, including ancient burial mounds from the Kofun Period around 300 CE. These early structures are integrated into the grounds to show the area's long history of habitation.

Traditional Japanese crafts come alive through hands-on workshops where you can learn papermaking and blacksmithing techniques while observing artisans at work. These activities show how craftspeople integrated their skills into everyday village life.

Plan for a leisurely walk across the expansive grounds, so wear comfortable shoes and bring an umbrella if rain is expected. Shaded rest areas and benches are spread throughout the site, offering places to sit and take a break.

The site serves as a filming location for Japanese historical productions, with complete reconstructions of merchant houses, workshops, and agricultural facilities used directly for scenes. Film crews choose this location because the authentic settings eliminate the need for artificial set decoration.
