Mukōgaoka-Yūen Amusement Park, Amusement park in Nagao district, Kawasaki, Japan
Mukōgaoka-Yūen was an amusement park in Nagao district of Kawasaki that operated roller coasters, carousels, and other rides across wooded grounds. The park closed permanently in 2002 after entertaining visitors for more than seven decades.
The park opened in April 1927 and quickly became a popular outing destination for families from Tokyo and nearby cities. Operators added new rides over the decades until declining attendance led to its final closure.
The wooden houses display sliding doors, raised floors, and thatched roofs that reflect rural building methods from different parts of Japan. Visitors walk through narrow lanes between the structures and see how rooms were arranged in farming households centuries ago.
The former park grounds now sit within Ikuta Ryokuchi and are easy to reach on the Odakyu line. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as the terrain is hilly and several paths wind through woods and open areas.
A small steam train carried visitors from the station directly to the park entrance and became a popular part of the experience. Children often pressed against the windows to watch the smoke and scenery as the locomotive climbed uphill.
