Fukiware Falls

Fukiware Falls is a natural monument in Numata featuring a powerful cascade approximately 30 meters (100 feet) wide and 7 meters (23 feet) tall. The waterfall flows through volcanic rock formations along the Katashina River, creating layers of water and mist.

In 1936, the Japanese Ministry of Education officially recognized this site as both a natural monument and scenic beauty spot. This designation protected it based on its geological importance and natural value.

Local stories connect this waterfall to an ancient Dragon Palace, a place where villagers once borrowed items for their celebrations. These tales shape how people experience and relate to the site today.

The site is accessible throughout spring, summer, and autumn via a network of maintained paths with several viewing platforms. Wear appropriate footwear as rocks can be slippery, especially after rain or from water spray.

The geological formation reveals a distinctive V-shaped valley carved by volcanic activity approximately 9 million years ago. Over time, erosion of the welded volcanic rock created the striking landscape visible today.
