Ōtaka Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Midori Ward, Nagoya, Japan
Ōtaka Castle is a Japanese castle ruin in Midori Ward, Nagoya, featuring stone foundations and earthen walls on raised ground. The remains display three concentric bailey structures that visitors can see laid out across the park.
The castle played a role during the Battle of Okehazama in 1560, when Tokugawa Ieyasu, then known as Matsudaira Motoyasu, carried out a supply operation. This moment marked a turning point in the region's military history.
The castle grounds hold the Shiroyama Hachiman Shrine, built in 1907 to honor local beliefs. Visitors can see how this shrine and the castle space together form a place where people gather to remember the past.
The site is accessible by a short walk from JR Otaka Station on the Tokaido Main Line, taking around 10 minutes on foot. Public transportation is the best option since there are no parking facilities at the location.
Archaeological digs in 2022 uncovered pottery, inkstones, and hair ornaments from the 15th and 16th centuries beneath the ground. These discoveries offer a glimpse into daily life during the castle's most active period.
