小野路公園, Urban park in Machida, Japan
Onoji Park is a green space in Machida, set within the Tama Hills, featuring a professional-grade baseball stadium, soccer fields, and open grass areas. The grounds are laid out so that sports facilities and walking paths sit side by side across a gently rolling landscape.
The park was built on the site of the former Asahi Life Tsurukawa Ground, which Machida City bought in 2004. It opened two years later, turning what had been a private sports ground into a space for the whole community.
The baseball stadium hosts regional tournaments that draw players and spectators from across the area throughout the year. Watching a match here gives a real sense of how deeply baseball is woven into everyday life in this part of Japan.
The park is reachable by bus from Tsurukawa Station, which makes it easy to visit without a car. Those who drive should know that free parking is available but limited in time, so it works best for shorter stays.
The seats in the stadium were taken from the former National Stadium of Japan and installed here when the park was built. Anyone sitting in the stands is literally sitting on a piece of Japanese sporting history without necessarily knowing it.
