Sanrio Puroland, Indoor theme park in Tama, Japan.
Sanrio Puroland is an indoor theme park in Ochiai, west of Tokyo, entirely dedicated to the characters of this Japanese brand. The facility spreads over several floors with rides, stage areas, dining spaces and retail zones, all designed in bright pastel colors.
The facility opened in 1990 after about two years of construction as the first indoor theme park project by Sanrio. The concept aimed to create a place where visitors could enter the world of the brand in any weather.
The entire facility revolves around Sanrio figures, whose company name combines the Japanese words for mountain and river. Guests encounter the characters everywhere through installations, costumes and merchandise, while live performances take place on different stages several times a day.
Visitors reach the entrance directly from Tama Center Station, which connects to two subway lines. The length of stay depends on interest in stage performances and interactive zones, with most guests planning several hours.
Some rooms are designed entirely in white and serve as backgrounds for projections that change depending on the time of day and season. The ceiling in the central area often displays changing light effects that create the impression of sky or starry night.
