Onoji Castle, Japanese castle in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
Onoji Castle is a Japanese castle ruin in Kanagawa Prefecture, situated on a forested hill near the city of Machida. The site retains earthworks, ditches, and stone wall remnants that follow the natural shape of the hillside.
The castle was built during the Sengoku period, roughly the 15th and 16th centuries, when local warlords needed fortified hilltop positions to control the surrounding area. It was abandoned after the wars ended and the region came under unified rule.
The castle displays traditional Japanese building methods that reflect how feudal societies were organized and defended. You can see these design choices in how the structures are arranged across the hillside.
The site is accessible on foot via forest trails, and sturdy shoes are a good idea since parts of the ground are uneven and sloped. Information boards at key points help you understand what you are looking at.
Despite sitting close to the greater Tokyo area, this castle ruin receives very few visitors and is often completely quiet when you arrive. The earthworks here are unusually well defined for a site of this age, making it easier to read the layout of the original fortification.
