Nagaike Park, Nature conservation park in Bessho, Japan
Nagaike Park is a nature conservation area in the Bessho district of Japan, built around three ponds named Nagaike, Tsukuike, and Sugataike, set within wetlands, streams, and woodland. Paths wind between the ponds and through the trees, making the different parts of the park easy to move between on foot.
An old legend tied to the main pond tells of a princess who entered its waters carrying a Buddha statue, which gave the pond its lasting place in local memory. Over time the area around the ponds was recognized for its natural qualities and set aside as a protected space.
The nature center inside the park displays old farming tools that were once used in the surrounding area, giving visitors a window into local rural life. The tools sit alongside exhibits about the plants and animals that live in and around the ponds today.
The park can be reached on foot from Minamiosawa Station in about 20 minutes, and there is also parking near the south entrance by the nature center. Marked trails run throughout the grounds, so finding your way around is straightforward even on a first visit.
A stone bridge dating from 1913, known as the Yotsuya Mitsuke Bridge, was moved from its original location and rebuilt inside the park to keep it from being lost. It stands as one of the few man-made structures in the park and connects the natural setting to the region's built history.
