Peace Bridge, Concrete bridge in Naka-ku, Japan
Peace Bridge is a concrete structure crossing the Motoyasu River in central Hiroshima, with distinctive railings featuring curved geometric patterns. It spans approximately 100 meters and carries both pedestrian and vehicle traffic between the Peace Memorial Park area and the city center.
The original structure at this location was destroyed in 1945 during the atomic bombing. The current bridge was built in 1952 as part of Hiroshima's reconstruction efforts.
The bridge carries symbolic weight in local memory as a link between the destroyed past and rebuilt future. Its design elements reflect ideas about renewal that visitors can see in the curved railings.
The bridge is open daily for pedestrians and vehicles, providing easy access between neighborhoods. You can walk across it in either direction or stop partway to view the river and surrounding areas.
The railings feature two distinct design patterns: solar motifs on the eastern side and a ship's keel pattern on the western side. This paired design creates a visual narrative about light and journey that many visitors overlook.
