Motoyasu Bridge, Road bridge in Naka-ku, Japan.
Motoyasu Bridge spans the Motoyasu River to connect different areas within Naka-ku while handling both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The structure sits at the edge of the Peace Memorial Park, serving as a gateway to the surrounding sites.
Originally built in 1590, the bridge was closer to the 1945 atomic bomb site than nearly any other structure. It underwent major reconstruction work in 1992 to repair damage from that event.
The structure belongs to the distinguished collection of 100 bridges in Japan, representing the evolution of Japanese engineering and architectural practices.
The bridge is easily accessible on foot and located near bus lines and train stations. Daytime visits work best since the area is busier and access to nearby memorial sites is straightforward.
The bridge sat so close to the explosion center that its stone walls collapsed into the water. Some of those original 16th century stones remain on the riverbed to this day.
