Kenbokki Island, Protected island in Hamanaka, Japan.

Kenbokki Island is a rocky formation off the Pacific coast of eastern Hokkaido with tall cliffs rising from the sea. Located within Akkeshi Prefectural Natural Park, the island features a natural shoreline shaped by tidal and wave action over time.

The island's name comes from the Ainu word 'kene-pok', meaning 'beneath the alder', referring to trees native to the region. This linguistic heritage reflects the deep connection between the landscape and the indigenous people of Hokkaido.

The island serves as a vital nesting ground for seabirds, with thousands of storm petrels returning each season to breed in cliff burrows. This role makes it an important refuge for marine bird species that depend on undisturbed coastal habitats.

Access requires hiring a licensed guide and paddling a kayak from the mainland across a short distance of open water. Plan visits during calmer weather months when conditions are safer for the water crossing and bird activity is most active.

During winter, natural spring water freezes along the northern cliffs to create formations that resemble hanging ice sculptures on the rock face. These temporary features form only in specific weather conditions and are rarely seen by visitors.
