Mishaka Pond, Water reservoir in Chino, Japan
Mishaka Pond is an artificial water reservoir nestled in the mountains of Nagano at roughly 1500 meters elevation. The water surface reflects surrounding trees and forest, creating a mirror-like appearance against the forested slopes.
The reservoir was built in 1933 to cool and regulate mountain water for rice farming in the nearby Sasahara district. This irrigation system became essential infrastructure for local agriculture in the region.
The pond holds quiet appeal for visitors exploring the mountain landscape on foot or by car. The surrounding forests and still water surface shape the character of the area and invite contemplation.
Most visitors reach the pond by car, roughly 45 minutes from Suwa Interchange, or by taxi from JR Chino Station. A parking area near the water allows easy access for walking around the site.
The water contains a specialized moss species that thrives in acidic conditions from the nearby Shibukawa River and gives the pond its exceptional clarity. This moss naturally prevents fish from growing in the water and maintains its distinctive appearance.
