Mount Shimagare, Mountain summit in Sakuho and Chino, Japan
Mount Shimagare is a mountain summit reaching 2,403 meters (7,883 feet) within the Yatsugatake range in northern Honshu. The routes to the peak ascend through steep terrain with exposed rock faces and dense fir forests.
The peak formed through volcanic activity that shaped the entire Yatsugatake range over millions of years. This geological past remains visible in the rock formations and structure of the surrounding landscape.
The mountain holds meaning for people in the surrounding villages who have long traveled its slopes. Its name comes from the way fir trees grow densely across the mountainside.
The main routes begin from the towns of Sakuho or Chino using well-marked trails that take several hours to reach the summit. A mountain hut situated just below the peak provides shelter and supplies for hikers.
The peak remains less crowded than other summits in the Yatsugatake range despite its substantial height. Its relatively isolated position creates unexpectedly open views across the surrounding landscape in multiple directions.
