Mount Gongen is a peak located between Fujimi and Hokuto with an elevation of about 2,715 meters (8,907 feet). The ascent passes through forests and rocky sections, with large boulders scattered across the summit and views extending to Mount Fuji and the surrounding alpine ranges.
The mountain has served as a territorial boundary between Yamanashi and Nagano Prefectures since Japan's feudal period. This geographical division shaped its regional importance throughout the centuries.
The mountain holds spiritual meaning rooted in ancient Japanese mountain worship traditions. Visitors can observe small shrines at the summit and sense how this peak remains significant to local communities.
The hike starts from Kannondaira parking lot at around 1,560 meters (5,118 feet) elevation with marked trails throughout. Wear sturdy footwear and prepare for changing conditions, especially on the exposed sections near the summit.
The summit features a natural rock formation called Kiretto, a sharp ridge that creates a distinctive outline against the sky. This striking shape makes the peak instantly recognizable from afar.
