Honzawa Onsen is a hot spring located at very high altitude in Japan's mountains, sitting above 2100 meters. The small bath measures about 2 by 3 meters and holds roughly five people, with the water containing sulfur minerals that create a distinctive smell and warm feel.
The hot spring opened in 2001 and has remained a place for relaxation and healing since then. It is known for two different types of thermal water, each with distinct properties.
The location is known in a mountainous region where people enjoy hiking and spending time outdoors. Visitors gather in the warm dining areas to share traditional Japanese meals prepared with local mountain ingredients.
To reach the spring, visitors must hike from a bus stop after traveling by bus from Koumi Station, with the path being narrow and requiring careful footing. It is wise to plan ahead and prepare for a multi-hour hike, ideally staying overnight at a nearby mountain lodge or campsite.
It is Japan's highest public outdoor hot spring, and on clear nights visitors can soak under the stars while the air is cold and snow may cover the surroundings. This rare combination of extreme altitude, open-air bathing, and wild mountain setting creates an experience found few other places.
