Hino Bridge, Road bridge between Hino and Tachikawa, Japan
Hino Bridge is a road bridge crossing the Tama River between Hino and Tachikawa in Tokyo's metropolitan area. The structure stretches 461 meters total and features a steel main span supported by concrete foundations on both river banks.
A bridge first opened at this location in 1966 to connect the two cities. The current structure was completed in 2011 as a complete rebuild to handle growing traffic demands.
The bridge received the 2007 Tanaka Prize from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers for its architectural excellence and structural innovation.
The bridge is open to vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians at all times without tolls or fees. Water levels in the river below can vary seasonally, which sometimes requires maintenance checks to ensure safe crossing conditions.
The structure received the 2007 Tanaka Prize from Japan's Society of Civil Engineers for its innovative design. Its red arch design uses a steel box girder with carefully engineered bracing to handle earthquakes and traffic loads over decades.
