Shinchō-ji, Buddhist temple in Shibasakichō, Japan.
Shinchō-ji is a Buddhist temple in Shibasakichō, Japan, with a main hall built from light timber and traditional roof forms. The grounds include several smaller structures arranged around a central area with stone lanterns and trimmed plants.
Shinjō Itō founded this place in autumn 1938 as an independent site outside the major Buddhist schools. After World War Two ended, the community developed its own teaching methods and spiritual approaches.
Visitors gather during early morning hours to observe quiet contemplation within the temple grounds. Incense and bell sounds accompany daily rituals in the courtyard.
Access comes from a short path leading from the nearest residential area, with level walkways of packed gravel inside the grounds. The main hall stands open to visitors during daylight hours, allowing quiet entry.
The community follows none of the major traditions of Japanese Buddhism and has instead developed its own practices since the postwar era. This independence shows in how teachings are delivered and ceremonies are conducted.
