立日橋, Combined road and monorail bridge in Tachikawa, Japan
The Tacchi Bridge, written 立日橋, crosses the Tama River and connects Shibasaki-cho in Tachikawa with Hinohonmachi in Hino. It carries road traffic and the Tama Monorail tracks on the same span.
The bridge opened for road traffic in 1989 and the Tama Monorail line was added in 2000, giving it its current form. Before any fixed crossing existed here, the spot was served by a traditional ferry crossing called Hino-no-Watashi.
The bridge carries both a road and the Tama Monorail line on the same structure, so you can watch trains pass overhead while cars move below. This kind of shared crossing is rarely seen in the wider region.
The bridge is within walking distance of Shibasaki Sports Center Station and Koshu Street Station on the Tama Monorail. Pedestrians can cross, but it is worth checking the marked pathways on site before setting off.
The name 立日 is made by combining the first character of Tachikawa (立川) with the first character of Hino (日野), the two cities the bridge links. The name is literally built from the two places it joins.
