Old Kobe Harbor Signal Tower, Maritime signal tower in Harborland, Japan.
The Old Kobe Harbor Signal Tower is a 46-meter metal structure at the waterfront with an elevator and viewing levels. From the top, visitors can see across the harbor and surrounding areas.
Built in 1921 at Pier No. 4, it directed maritime traffic in Kobe Harbor until radio systems replaced visual signals in 1990. After being decommissioned, it was relocated to its current location in 1992 as part of the Harborland development project.
The tower displays city flags and maritime signals that show how shipping was central to Kobe's past. You can see the symbols and methods that once connected the harbor to the wider maritime world.
The tower is located near the Anpanman Children's Museum along the Harbor Walk and can be reached from either Kobe Station or Harborland Station. The area is easy to explore on foot with multiple access routes.
The tower was originally at a different location and operated for several decades before being entirely relocated to its current site. This relocation makes it a remarkable example of how historic structures are preserved within modern urban development.
