Kasuga-jinja, A Shinto shrine located in Miyayama-cho, Toyonaka City, Osaka Prefecture.

Kasuga-jinja is a small Shinto shrine in the Miyayama-cho neighborhood of Toyonaka with traditional wooden buildings and quiet stone pathways, surrounded by trees and small gardens. The main hall, called the honden, has a simple appearance with a traditional curved roof and is accompanied by stone lanterns and small wooden plaques where visitors can write wishes.

Founded at an unknown date, the shrine is said in its records to have had its hall repaired in 835, and it long served as the tutelary shrine of the former Sakuraidani village. It burned in 1338 and was rebuilt in 1483; in 1509 the Muromachi shogun Ashikaga Yoshitane halved its 152 koku of shrine land, and it was again destroyed in fighting during Oda Nobunaga's campaign against Araki Murashige, the kami being placed in a temporary hall in 1578. It was rebuilt under the Abe Settsu-no-kami family, and the deities were transferred to the present hall on 12 September 1650.

The shrine's name comes from Kasuga, the kami tradition centered on Takemikazuchi, and its autumn reitaisai on 12 October includes kagura from 2 to 9 p.m. and danjiri-bayashi from 5:20 to 6 p.m. On 15 January, the Sagicho rite burns New Year's kadomatsu and shimenawa decorations.

Access is by Hankyu Bus to the Miyayama stop, a short walk from the shrine; buses run from Toyonaka Station on the Hankyu Takarazuka Line, Senri-Chuo Station on the Kita-Osaka Kyuko Line and Shibahara-Satsukidai-mae Station on the Osaka Monorail. By car, the shrine is 800 m north of the Sakuramachi intersection on the Toyonaka-Kameoka and Osaka Chuo Kanjo roads. The azalea garden opens in early April, and the New Year bonfire rite is held on 15 January.

The stone lantern in front of the hall was donated in 1744 by the local lord Abe Settsu-no-kami, and the pair of guardian dogs (komainu) before the main hall was given in 1824 by young men of Shoji and Uchida villages. The small subsidiary shrines stand on the raised ground above the main hall.
