Sapporo Ohashi Bridge, Road bridge in Sapporo, Japan
Sapporo Ohashi Bridge is a road bridge spanning the Toyohira River with four lanes, connecting the northern and southern districts of Sapporo via National Route 337. It features multiple continuous girder spans with a central section designed for longer distance coverage.
The first section opened in 1988 using innovative engineering methods. A second phase was completed in 2016 to handle increased traffic demands.
The pillars on the Tobetsu side feature designs inspired by traditional wooden boats that once crossed the Ishikari River.
The bridge has ample lanes for regular vehicle traffic and is designed to handle large vehicles. Visitors can easily cross from either side of the river.
The steel box girders were enhanced in the second phase with specific improvements to prevent pavement cracking. These engineering solutions show how builders adapted to address problems identified in the original structure.
