東大橋, Steel bridge in Hiroshima, Japan
The Higashi-Ohashi Bridge spans across the Sarugamigawa River in Hiroshima, connecting both sides of the city with its modern steel structure.
The original wooden bridge survived the atomic bombing of August 6, 1945, serving as a crucial evacuation route for numerous injured residents.
The bridge stands near the Hijiyama Hospital and Hijiyama Elementary School, forming an essential part of the local community infrastructure.
After extensive renovation work costing 2.5 billion yen, the bridge reopened in 2019 with improved structural features and pedestrian access.
The bridge includes preserved portions of the original 1933 pier structures, maintaining a physical connection to its historical past.
