東洋大橋

東洋大橋, Private road bridge in Minami-ku, Japan

The Toyo Bridge is a private road bridge in Hiroshima that spans approximately 560 meters across the Sarugoku River. It connects different areas of the large Mazda factory complex and serves mainly to transport employees and materials between the various production facilities.

Construction of the bridge took place in 1965 and it was named after Toyo Kogyo, the former name of what is now Mazda Corporation. At the time of its completion, it was one of the largest private bridges of its kind and symbolized the company's expansion in the postwar period.

The bridge opens to the public once a year during Mazda's corporate marathon event, offering rare access to the normally restricted industrial site. This day reveals to visitors how the company integrates its facilities and the scale of operations across the river.

Access to the bridge is normally restricted to company vehicles and authorized employees, so visiting for regular tourists is only possible during the annual marathon event. Those interested in attending this special occasion should check the specific details and registration requirements in advance.

The bridge was once built as one of the longest private bridges of its time and still shows the technical skill of postwar industry. Its construction with seven steel I-girder spans and three continuous box girder spans represents a noteworthy example of engineering at the time.
