Tsukinowa Kofun

Tsukinowa Kofun is a circular burial mound standing 10 meters tall with a 60-meter diameter. It features protective stones called fukiishi covering its slopes to stabilize the ancient structure.

This burial mound dates to Japan's Kofun period, created between the 3rd and 6th centuries. Archaeological investigations in the 1950s revealed details about the construction methods and funeral practices of that era.

This circular burial mound reflects how people honored their dead and the social positions they held in ancient times. The way it was built shows craft traditions that were passed down through generations.

The site is located in Okayama Prefecture and provides basic information about ancient Japanese burial traditions. Wear comfortable shoes since the ground is uneven and climbing the mound can be tiring.

Building this mound required stacking 80,000 individual stones, showing the technical knowledge and coordination of ancient workers. This scale of effort reveals how important and elaborate funeral ceremonies were for people of high status.
