The Matsunobu House is a traditional merchant residence in Yame with separate areas for living quarters and work spaces with earthen floors. The structure features plastered walls and tiled roofing characteristic of Japanese commercial buildings from that era.

The house was built in the mid-19th century and operated as a commercial establishment trading paper and tea. Its location on a secondary route between Kurume and Kumamoto made it a convenient stop for merchants and travelers.

The residence shows how wealthy merchants lived and worked during the Edo period, with clear divisions between business and family spaces. The spatial arrangement reflects a life where commerce, daily routines, and domestic affairs shared the same building.

The residence is accessible for visits, though note that the upper floor is closed to the public as it serves as storage space. It's worth taking your time to explore the ground-level rooms and appreciate the craftsmanship throughout the structure.
