横浜刑務所, building in Konan-ku, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
Yokohama Prison is a detention facility in Konan-Ku with the capacity to hold around 1,200 male inmates. The compound is enclosed by high walls and nets, with work areas, a shrine, and exhibition spaces spread across extensive grounds.
The facility was originally founded in Shimoda in 1855 and relocated to Yokohama following Japan's opening to foreign trade. The current building was completed in 1936 after the original structure was destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake.
The facility carries the name of its location in Yokohama. Visitors can observe during the annual November exhibition how the institution connects with the community and how various craft activities are integrated into daily operations.
The facility is conveniently located near Kamioooka and Konan Chuo train stations. Visitors can tour the grounds during the annual Correction Exposition in November when workshops and products are open to the public.
The facility is known for producing udon noodles, one of the few such productions in Japan. The noodles are sold during the November exhibition and are highly sought after by visitors for their quality.
