Suitengu Hiranuma Jinja Shrine, Shinto shrine in Japan
Suitengu Hiranuma Jinja is a small Shinto shrine located in Nishi-ku, Yokohama, featuring modest wooden structures that are aged yet well-maintained. The grounds include a main altar, stone lanterns, and small statues arranged along quiet paths and surrounded by trees and plants.
The shrine was founded in 1839 after Kyube Hiranuma reclaimed land in the area that had previously been swampy or flooded. A sacred amulet discovered on the reclaimed land inspired its establishment as a protective place for the local community.
The shrine is dedicated to a water deity venerated in local tradition for safe childbirth and healthy pregnancies. Visitors leave small wooden plaques with written wishes and bring flowers as tokens of gratitude and hope.
The shrine is easily accessible on foot and situated in a quiet residential neighborhood with small shops nearby. Visitors can come year-round for a brief, peaceful stop away from busy city streets.
Every January 5 the shrine holds a Yutate Shinji ceremony where hot water is boiled and shared among visitors. People believe that drinking this water can prevent diseases and colds in the coming year.
