Hara Model Railway Museum, Model railway museum in Takashima district, Yokohama, Japan.
Hara Model Railway Museum is a railway museum in Takashima district, Yokohama, dedicated to the world of model trains. Thousands of model trains from Asia, Europe and North America fill large display cases and shelves across a spacious floor.
The museum opened its doors in 2012, making a large private collection of model railways available to the public. The exhibit grew quickly and has since drawn railway fans and families from across Japan.
The name honors a private collector whose passion for model railways now welcomes visitors of all ages. The large layout inspired by European rail lines shows detailed landscapes with stations, bridges and track fields that recall French and German railway routes.
The museum sits on the second floor of an office building near Yokohama main station and is reachable after a short walk. Several entrances from the station complex make the approach simple and accessible.
The gauge of the model railways sits at scale 1:32 and allows electrically controlled journeys through more than 450 meters (1,480 feet) of track indoors. This size permits rich detail work on trains and landscapes that would otherwise be possible only in outdoor layouts.
