Yokohama Dia Building, Office skyscraper in Kinkōchō, Yokohama, Japan.
The Yokohama Dia Building is an office skyscraper in the Kinkōchō business district of Yokohama, Japan, with a glass and steel exterior. The tower has a distinctive angular shape, with slanted planes that set it apart from the more rectangular towers nearby.
The building was completed in December 2009, part of a wave of high-rise projects that reshaped Yokohama's business waterfront in the 2000s. Shortly after opening, it received the BCS Prize, an award given by the Building Contractors Society of Japan for quality construction.
The name "Dia" comes from the Japanese word for diamond, a reference to the angular shape of the building that stands out against the surrounding low-rise blocks. The glass facade changes appearance depending on the light, giving it a different look in the morning than at dusk.
The building sits very close to Yokohama Station, making it easy to reach on foot from the main rail and subway hub. As an office tower, access for general visitors is limited to the ground-floor lobby and shared common areas.
Although it sits in the middle of a busy commercial area, the building is oriented so that its slanted facades catch reflections of the sky, making it look completely different depending on the weather. On overcast days the surface appears almost silver, while in full sun it takes on a deep blue tone.
