Uemura Naomi Memorial Sports Park

Uemura Naomi Memorial Sports Park, Park in Japan

The Uemura Naomi Memorial Sports Park is a recreation area in Toyooka dedicated to the famous mountaineer and explorer. The park covers about 31,500 square meters with walking paths, open grassy areas, and features a south-facing slope with a small stream running through it.

Uemura Naomi was born in Toyooka and became the first person to climb Mount Denali in Alaska alone during winter. He went missing in 1984 during his descent from the mountain, losing contact and never being heard from again.

The park is named after explorer Uemura Naomi and reflects the rural surroundings that inspired him as a child. Visitors can see how the rice fields and mountain backdrop connect to his story and his deep relationship with nature.

The park is best accessed by car and offers free parking for visitors. Most signage is in Japanese, so bringing a translation app or knowing some basic Japanese words will be helpful for navigation.

The museum adjacent to the park offers hands-on experiences where visitors can carry a backpack weighing about 25 kilograms, set up a tent, or try climbing a dogsled model. These practical activities help visitors understand firsthand the physical challenges Naomi faced during his expeditions.
