Seiryuji, Buddhist temple in Tokamachi, Japan
Seiryuji is a Buddhist temple in Tokamachi built with multiple wooden buildings and a prominent five-story pagoda standing on the grounds. The complex also includes meditation halls and other structures arranged in a traditional Japanese layout.
The temple was founded in 1982 and grew under the guidance of Acharya Ryukou Oda into an important center. A major milestone was the completion of a large Buddha statue that would later define the site.
The temple draws people from around the world who gather to meditate and observe Buddhist practices together. Monks here welcome visitors openly, creating a place where different backgrounds meet for spiritual reflection.
The temple is easily reached by public bus from Tokamachi Station and sits in a quiet rural setting. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since you will spend time exploring the grounds and visiting different areas.
The site houses a massive bronze Buddha statue recognized as one of the largest seated bronze figures in Japan. This striking sculpture was created under Oda's supervision and draws visitors from around the world.
