Tomaritaka Bridge, Transport bridge in Naha, Japan.
Tomaritaka Bridge is a road bridge in Naha that spans the mouth of the Asato River, connecting the districts of Tomari and Maejima via National Route 58. The structure features an elevated arch section in the middle that allowed boats to pass underneath.
The original wooden bridge was replaced with a stone structure in 1699, a construction project that took two years to complete. This major renovation marked an important turning point in Naha's infrastructure development.
The bridge received recognition from Russian naval fleet secretary Ivan Goncharov in 1854 for its architectural design and position against the setting sun.
The bridge serves as a main link between Naha Airport and the city center, with multiple bus routes operating across it. Pedestrians and cyclists can also use the structure to move between the two districts.
The name means literally "high bridge" and refers to the three steps and elevated arch that allowed merchant boats to pass through. This functional design was innovative for the region in the early 1700s.
