Naha, Capital city in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan.
Naha is the capital of Okinawa Prefecture on the southern coast of Okinawa Island. The city extends across several districts with shopping areas, temples, and modern office buildings along a harbor.
The city was once a trading port of the Ryukyu Kingdom and maintained relations with China and Southeast Asia before the 19th century. After annexation by Japan in 1879, it became the prefectural capital and experienced extensive reconstruction following World War II.
The name derives from the word "naba," meaning flatland or field in the old Ryukyuan language. Locals still celebrate Eisa dance festivals during summer, when neighborhood groups move through streets with drums and traditional costumes.
The airport sits close to the city center and allows quick access to most neighborhoods. The monorail connects the main districts and helps with orientation across the city.
In the Tsuboya area, potters still produce ceramics using techniques from the 17th century. Some workshops open their doors and show visitors the firing process and glazing methods.
