Urasoe Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Urasoe, Japan
The stone walls and limestone structures of Urasoe Castle extend across 380 meters, positioned 140 meters above sea level on Okinawa Island.
The castle functioned as the capital of Chuzan principality before the unification of Okinawa into the Ryukyu Kingdom and the transfer to Shuri Castle.
The royal mausoleum contains three stone coffins from China, where King Eiso, who ruled Chuzan from 1260 to 1299, rests near the northwest cliff.
Located at 2-chome-53-1 Nakama, the castle grounds remain open throughout the day without entrance fees, offering views of the East China Sea.
Archaeological excavations revealed over 30,000 artifacts, an artificial lake, a tunnel entrance, and a ceremonial path connecting the castle to royal tombs.
