Urasoe Art Museum

The Urasoe Art Museum features a modern architectural design with a distinctive tower structure surrounded by forest along Route 330 in Okinawa Prefecture.

The museum, which opened in February 1990, stands as the first public museum in Okinawa and holds the distinction of being Japan's first lacquer museum.

The permanent collection centers on Ryukyu lacquerware, a traditional craft dating from the 15th century when the Ryukyu Kingdom traded with various Asian nations.

Visitors can access the museum from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with extended hours until 7:00 PM on Fridays, and adult admission costs 300 yen.

The museum provides hands-on opportunities for visitors to interact with lacquerware displays while presenting video demonstrations of historical crafting techniques.
