Urasoe, Administrative division in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan
Urasoe is a large city in Okinawa Prefecture that stretches about 19 square kilometers between Naha and Ginowan, mixing residential areas, shopping districts, and schools near the East China Sea. The city sits on hilly terrain overlooking the coast and blends modern infrastructure with historic sites like the former castle ruins.
The city served as the capital of the Kingdom of Chuzan until the late 14th century, when King Shunten ruled from the castle here. After World War II, the area developed around American military bases until the city was formally established in 1970.
The name comes from the Ryukyuan word 'urashii', meaning joy, still heard in local dialect today. Visitors notice the typical shisa lion guardians on rooftops and painted ceramic tiles on public buildings that showcase local craftsmanship.
The city lies along the Okinawa Expressway and is easy to reach through three stops on the urban monorail. Most locations can be explored on foot or by bike, though the hilly streets may feel tiring in hot weather.
The former American housing area in Minatogawa now hosts dozens of small bakeries and cafés that combine Western pastries with local ingredients. Orion Breweries has its headquarters here and the brewery building can be seen from the street.
