The Port of Yaizu is a fishing port on the Pacific coast of Japan, in the city of Yaizu, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is divided into two working areas: one for deep-sea fishing vessels targeting tuna and bonito, and another for coastal boats bringing in mackerel and sardines.
Over the course of the 20th century, Yaizu grew from a local fishing town into one of Japan's leading fishing centers. The expansion of processing and distribution facilities turned it into a key hub for bonito landings and the production of katsuobushi, the dried bonito flakes used across Japanese cooking.
The port of Yaizu is known for its salted mackerel, which is both an everyday food and a common gift in the region. Visitors can find these products in the fish market area, often packaged in ways that make them easy to carry home.
The port is about a 15-minute walk from Yaizu Station, making it easy to reach without a car. Once there, the Yaizu Fish Center offers a large shopping area with fish stalls and restaurants where visitors can buy fresh products or eat on the spot.
Yaizu is one of the few ports in Japan where fishing boats from many different regions of the country regularly come to land their catches. The local product called Saba Chicken has nothing to do with chicken: it is marinated mackerel that can be eaten cold from the package or steamed, and the name comes from its tender texture.
