猪苗代スキー場, Ski resort in Inawashiro, Japan
Inawashiro Ski Resort (猪苗代スキー場) is a ski resort on the slopes of Mount Bandai in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, with 18 runs and a vertical drop of around 1,900 feet (580 meters). The slopes are spread across several sections of the mountain, covering a range of difficulty levels.
The resort was established as a winter sports destination in central Fukushima Prefecture and helped grow tourism in the broader Tohoku region. Over the years it became one of the most recognized ski areas in eastern Japan.
The resort sits on the slopes of Mount Bandai, and on clear days the view down toward Lake Inawashiro stretches wide across the valley below the runs. For many visitors from the Tohoku region, this combination of skiing and open landscape is a familiar part of the winter season.
The resort has eight lift systems along with equipment rental and ski lessons for all levels, so first-time visitors can get started without bringing gear. A large on-site parking area makes it easy to arrive by car for a day trip.
On certain days, a sea of clouds forms below the upper runs, leaving skiers above the cloud layer while the valley disappears underneath. This effect tends to appear in early winter and depends on specific weather conditions, so it is not guaranteed on every visit.
