Makinogaike Ryokuchi, Public park in Meito, Japan
Makinogaike Ryokuchi is a large public park in Meito with a central lake covering about 1.2 square kilometers. The space includes a golf course, baseball fields, playgrounds, and various facilities for visitors to enjoy.
The park began as an air defense green space in the 1940s and opened to the public as a recreation area in 1957. Its central lake, however, originated from an irrigation system built much earlier in the 1600s.
The park centers on bird watching with dedicated areas where visitors can observe different species throughout the year. These spaces invite you to experience local nature through the rhythm of seasons.
The park is well equipped with accessible restrooms, playgrounds, and various sports fields for different activities. Plan time to explore the full area since it is quite large and spread out.
The pond in the park was originally built in 1646 as an irrigation reservoir and is today one of the largest water bodies in Nagoya at about 16 hectares. This long history as a water storage system still contributes to the area's function today.
