Hakusan Chūkyo Shrine, Shinto shrine in Gifu Prefecture, Japan

Hakusan Chūkyo Shrine stands at the confluence of the Ishiuchi and Miyagawa rivers in Shirotori, Gujō, with a bridge over the approach path. Its wooden worship hall, rebuilt in 1856, rests on tall posts above a stone foundation, with weathered vertical planks, an overhanging roof with exposed rafters, and a sacred rope with white zigzag streamers across the front. A carved panel sits below the planked upper section, and a low white fence with a Japanese sign stands before it.

Tradition dates the shrine's founding to 82 CE under Emperor Keikō, when the deity gave an oracle at Mount Funao. In 717 the monk Taichō enlarged the precinct and repaired the hall. In 735 Emperor Shōmu sent Kibi no Makibi with a sacred sword and banned tree felling; Makibi had the village name written Ishidome, later changed to Ishidome with a different character. The present main hall was rebuilt in 1856.

The shrine's name comes from its position midway between Nagataki and the summit on the old Hakusan pilgrimage route from Mino. Each May, two miko perform the five-part kagura dance to gagaku music dating from 1120, a custom designated an intangible folk cultural property by Gujō. In October, the Gedonage festival marks the harvest.

The shrine stands on the left bank of the Ishidō River where the Miyagawa tributary joins it, and a bridge crosses to the approach path. By car it is about 12 km, roughly 20 minutes, from the Michi-no-eki Hakusan Bunka no Sato Nagataki via Routes 314 and 127. The Shirotori Kōtsū Ishidō line bus runs about three round trips daily to the Uwazaisho stop, 300 m south, but not on Sundays and holidays, and the midday service is on demand.

The grounds hold the Jōan-sugi, a cedar, and a beech forest that were designated a prefectural natural monument on 13 November 1974. The shrine also keeps a bronze Kokūzō Bosatsu statue said to have been donated by Fujiwara no Hidehira in 1184.
