Mount Dainichi, Mountain peak in Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
Mount Dainichi rises to 1,709 meters (5,610 feet) within the Ryōhaku Mountains in Gifu Prefecture. It forms a natural boundary between the cities of Gujō and Takayama and is accessible via multiple climbing routes that lead to the summit.
The mountain once marked the boundary between three ancient Japanese provinces: Mino, Hida, and Echizen. Following administrative changes in the 1950s, it became part of Gifu Prefecture's territory.
The mountain feeds three major rivers that have long supported farming communities in the surrounding valleys. Local people depend on the water flowing down its slopes to irrigate their fields and sustain their livelihoods.
The mountain is accessible via multiple hiking trails that suit different fitness levels. On clear days, the summit offers views across to neighboring peaks in the surrounding mountain range.
The mountain shifted between two prefectures during the major administrative reorganizations of the 1950s. This makes it a place that reflects the complicated history of regional boundary changes in Japan.
