The construction of this infrastructure project began in 1961 and reached completion in 1963, adding significant water management capabilities to Gifu Prefecture.
The dam represents Japanese engineering excellence in water resource management, serving multiple communities along the Shō River tributary system.
The reservoir maintains a normal water elevation of 1,230 meters and stores 14.2 million cubic meters of water for hydroelectric power generation.
The associated hydroelectric power station, located 7.1 kilometers downstream, generates 66.3 MW of electricity using a Francis-type turbine system.
