Meguro Sky Garden

Meguro Sky Garden is a circular roof garden that sits above a metropolitan expressway in Tokyo. The space features over 1,000 trees including cherry blossoms and pine varieties planted across its expanse.

The garden opened in 2013 as part of a project to convert empty space above highway junctions into public green areas. This transformation addressed the need to make better use of urban space in Tokyo.

The garden combines traditional Japanese landscaping with bamboo groves and seasonal plantings that feel at home above the busy expressway. This green space shows how people have woven nature into the rhythm of urban Tokyo.

The garden is open daily and can be reached by elevator or stairs just a few minutes from Ikejiri-ohashi Station. The flat terrain and good pathways make it easy to explore the space at your own pace.

The garden sits between 15 to 35 meters above street level and is ringed with pine trees, offering unexpected views of the city and Mount Fuji on clear days. This elevation creates a completely different perspective on Tokyo than you would find at ground level.
