直江津港, Commercial port in Joetsu, Japan
直江津港, known in English as the Port of Naoestu, is a working port on the Sea of Japan coast in Joetsu, used for cargo shipping, passenger ferry services, and energy production. The waterfront has separate areas for freight operations and the ferry terminal, making it easy to see the different activities at a glance.
This harbor appears in written records from the Nara period, making it one of the oldest documented ports on the Sea of Japan. Over the following centuries it grew into a key trading point connecting the inland region of Echigo to coastal markets farther along the coast.
The ferry crossing to Sado Island is part of everyday life for people on both sides of the water. At the terminal, you can watch locals heading to the island alongside travelers carrying bicycles and luggage.
The port area is open to the public, and the waterfront walkway gives a clear view of both the ferry terminal and the freight docks. The ferry to Sado Island runs several times a day, so arriving a little before departure gives you time to watch the loading process.
The port hosts a thermal power plant that runs on liquefied natural gas and sends electricity to areas well beyond Joetsu. This means that on a single visit, you are standing next to both a working maritime hub and a regional power source.
