Sanada Treasures Museum, Historical museum in Matsushiro, Japan
The Sanada Treasures Museum is a history museum in Matsushiro, a historic district of Nagano, holding samurai armor, weapons, calligraphy, and paintings from one of the region's most powerful families. The objects on display are drawn from the personal holdings of the Sanada lords and cover a wide span of time in Japanese feudal history.
The Sanada family rose to power in the 1500s and controlled this mountain territory through a period that included some of the most turbulent conflicts in Japanese history, including the siege of Osaka. The museum was later set up in the old castle town where the family had its seat of power.
The Sanada family shaped life in Matsushiro for centuries, and the museum reflects how deeply rooted that presence still is in the area. Visitors can see objects that were part of everyday samurai leadership, from writing tools to ceremonially decorated weapons.
The museum is in Matsushiro, reachable by bus from central Nagano, and sits near other historic sites in the old castle town area. Since the displays rotate four times a year, it is worth checking in advance which part of the collection is on view before you go.
Among the objects in the collection are documents signed on opposing sides of the same conflict, since the Sanada famously split their allegiances during key wars to ensure the family's survival regardless of who won. This makes the collection a rare record of a clan that sometimes faced itself across the battlefield.
